Full Blood Count

Eosinophil count

Eosinophils are white cells built to fight parasites, and they are also central to allergic conditions such as asthma, hay fever and eczema.

Measured in your health assessment, with a doctor to explain your result. Book yours

Eosinophil granule release

Why it matters

They carry granules packed with toxic proteins, the orange-pink grains that give them their name when stained in the lab. In allergy, the same weapons inflame the airways and the skin.

What a result can mean

Lower than the range

A low count is usually of no significance. Steroids, stress and acute infection all lower it for a while.

Higher than the range

A higher count is most often linked with allergies, asthma and eczema, certain medicines or parasitic infections, which are more likely after travel. Occasionally it reflects an inflammatory or blood condition.

What can help

Good control of asthma, eczema or hay fever often brings the count down. A persistently raised count, especially after travel abroad, may prompt a stool test for parasites.
