Lymphocyte response examples

Why it matters

They hold your immune memory, which is why you rarely catch measles twice and why vaccines work. Most of them live in your lymph nodes, spleen and gut rather than in your blood.

What a result can mean

Lower than the range

Lymphocytes can fall after a viral illness, physical stress, heavy exercise, steroid treatment or poor nutrition, and they drift down slowly with age. Very low counts are seen with some immune conditions and treatments.

Higher than the range

Raised lymphocytes are common during and after viral infections such as glandular fever. A persistently high count in an older adult can point to chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, which is often slow-growing and found on routine tests.

What can help

A one-off change is usually rechecked after any infection has passed. Good sleep, regular activity and a varied diet support normal immune function, and persistent changes are investigated.
