Apo B compared with Apo A-I
In the INTERHEART study of heart attacks across 52 countries, this ratio was the strongest single blood marker of risk, ahead of the traditional cholesterol measures.
A lower ratio is favourable, with relatively more HDL protein than artery-clogging particles.
A higher ratio means the balance is tipped towards artery-clogging particles, typically from a high LDL or ApoB, a low HDL, or both.
Lowering ApoB, through diet, weight, activity and, where risk is high, medicines, has the biggest effect; exercise and not smoking support ApoA-I.
