Testosterone

Testosterone is the main male sex hormone, made by the testes. Women make smaller amounts in the ovaries and adrenal glands.

Testosterone receptor signalling

Why it matters

It builds muscle and bone, drives libido and sperm production, and affects energy and mood. Levels peak in the early morning, which is why it is best measured before 11 am.

What a result can mean

Lower than the range

Low testosterone in men can cause low libido, erection problems, tiredness and loss of muscle. It is linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes, poor sleep, heavy drinking, some medicines and pituitary or testicular conditions, and it falls gradually with age.

Higher than the range

In men, high levels usually come from testosterone or anabolic steroid use. In women, raised testosterone is most often due to polycystic ovary syndrome, which can cause excess hair, acne and irregular periods.

What can help

Losing excess weight, regular exercise (especially strength training), good sleep and less alcohol can all raise a low testosterone. Men with consistently low levels and symptoms may be offered testosterone treatment once the cause has been assessed.
