Oestradiol receptor signalling
Hormonal Health
Oestradiol is the main form of oestrogen. It drives the menstrual cycle, keeps bones strong and affects the heart, skin, brain and mood. Men make it too, from testosterone.

Oestradiol receptor signalling
In women it rises and falls across the cycle and drops at the menopause, which explains many menopausal symptoms and the faster bone loss that follows.
Low oestradiol occurs after the menopause, with premature ovarian insufficiency, with very low body weight or intense training, and in men with low testosterone. Long-term low levels weaken bones.
High levels are expected around ovulation, in pregnancy and with HRT. Otherwise they can be linked with ovarian cysts, obesity (fat tissue makes oestrogen) and, in men, liver disease or some medicines.
HRT relieves menopausal symptoms and protects bone for many women. Restoring a healthy weight helps when low levels come from under-eating or over-training.
