Progesterone receptor signalling
A rise in the second half of the cycle confirms that ovulation has happened, which is why it is usually measured about a week before an expected period: day 21 of a 28-day cycle.
A low level in the second half of the cycle suggests ovulation didn't happen, which can occur with polycystic ovary syndrome, stress, weight changes, around the menopause or with hormonal contraception. In the first half of the cycle a low level is normal.
High levels are expected after ovulation and in pregnancy.
Results are read against the day of your cycle. A healthy weight and managing conditions such as PCOS support regular ovulation, and fertility clinics can help when ovulation isn't happening.
