Resistin participates in immune signalling
It was named for causing insulin ‘resistance’ in mice. In humans its role is less direct, but higher levels go with inflammation, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.
A low level is generally favourable.
Raised levels are linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation and cardiovascular risk.
Weight loss, regular exercise and a Mediterranean-style diet tend to lower resistin along with other markers of inflammation.
