Liver Health

GGT

GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) is an enzyme in the liver and bile ducts that helps recycle glutathione, one of the body's main antioxidants.

Measured in your health assessment, with a doctor to explain your result. Book yours

GGT helps break down glutathione

Why it matters

It is very sensitive, rising with even moderate regular drinking, fatty liver and many medicines. That makes it a useful early warning sign, and a way to tell whether a raised ALP comes from the liver.

What a result can mean

Lower than the range

A low GGT is normal and favourable.

Higher than the range

Common causes are alcohol, fatty liver, excess weight and medicines such as some anti-epileptic drugs. A raised GGT is also linked with a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.

What can help

GGT often falls within weeks of cutting down on alcohol, which makes it a good way to track progress. Weight loss and exercise help when a fatty liver is the cause.
